Voyeur Exhibition
Shag’s second solo exhibition at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York was held from the 22nd November to the 20th December 2008. The exhibition, titled Voyeur: New Paintings by Shag, included twenty new paintings, three fish sculptures, and three custom wallpapers.
The exhibition’s twenty acrylic on panel paintings are based on the theme of voyeurism. The first set of ten paintings are large, at 48” by 24”, and show mid-century modern homes and glamorous voyeurs. The second set of ten smaller paintings show attractive young ladies being watched by peeping Toms, Trevors, and Terrys. Unexplained, all twenty paintings also include a fish in some form, from a rug pattern to swimming in a cocktail.
Three hand-carved and hand-painted wooden fish sculptures were also made and hung in the gallery for the voyeur exhibition. They link to the fish present in all twenty of the new paintings.
Complementing the hanging fish sculptures, the gallery’s project room was covered in flocked-velvet Shag-designed wallpaper with (unsurprisingly) a fish motif. This was produced in collaboration with Curio Wallcoverings in aqua, green, and rust. Each individual roll cost $200 USD and has a width of 27 inches and a length of 15 feet, giving 30 square feet coverage.
