On the Shoulders of Giants Exhibition
The On the Shoulders of Giants exhibition ran at the Outré Galleries in Australia in 2006, in Melbourne from April 22nd to May 23rd, and in Sydney from April 29th to May 28th. Josh Agle created nineteen original paintings in homage to famous artists from the past, plus one painting of Rose Seidler’s House.
Melbourne
The fourteen original acrylic and vinyl paint on wood panel paintings at the Outré Gallery in Melbourne are recreations of famous historic images reimagined in Josh Agle’s inimitable style.
The show print for the Melbourne edition of the On The Shoulders of Giants exhibition was called The Elegant Thief. This 14-color serigraph print measures 30″ by 19″ and is hand signed and numbered in a limited edition of 250.
Sydney
Five of the six original acrylic and vinyl paint on wood panel paintings at the Outré Gallery in Sydney are further recreations of famous historic images reimagined again in Josh Agle’s style. The sixth shows Rose Seidler’s House, iconic mid-century modern architecture.
The show print for the Sydney edition of the On The Shoulders of Giants exhibition was called Rose Seidler’s House. This 8-color serigraph print measures 35″ by 21″ and is hand signed and numbered in a limited edition of 195. Note that the original was shown at the exhibition (as shown above).
The Rose Seidler House was designed by Harry Seidler for his parents in the style of Staatliches Bauhaus. The house in Wahroonga, a suburb of Sydney, was completed in 1950. The site overlooks the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase reserve and at the time was remotely situated, it is now a museum managed by Sydney Living Museums. The Rose Seidler’s House painting and print show a view of the inside area with fireplace looking out onto the sundeck and mural. The painting Christina’s World also features the Rose Seidler’s House, this time a distant exterior view.
