Donna con Bambino Exhibition

An unusual original painting by Josh Agle on eBay led me to research the Donna con Bambino exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. This was the first solo exhibition by Josh Agle at this gallery and was held from the 17th November (preview) to the 23rd December 2006. It featured thirty-four original paintings and several artist proofs from previously sold-out serigraphs.

The exhibition includes seventeen acrylic on panel depictions of beautiful women relaxing in their lavish homes alongside their pets while ignoring news of disasters airing live on their televisions. For each of these pictures, there is a larger acrylic on canvas focusing on a detail of the panel painting. These seventeen cropped magnifications, or close-ups, appear as modernist abstracts alongside their vibrant originals. The exhibition title of woman and child (Donna con Bambino) represents both the women’s relationships with their pampered pets as well as the duos of paired paintings with their large-scale zoomed images.

In addition to the thirty-four original paintings, individual artist proof serigraphs were shown and sold in a gallery at the exhibition. These included the 2003 serigraphs Baron Vodkalov (from the Our Deadly Affair exhibition) and Blue Miles.

And to finish, a few photographs from the exhibition itself showing the stunning art on display. Note that the majority of the images from this post are sourced from the Jonathan LeVine Gallery website.
