Punk OC: From the Streets of Suburbia
Fullerton Museum Center, Fullerton, California – April 5-August 10, 2025.
The Punk OC: From the Streets of Suburbia Exhibition is held at the Fullerton Museum Center in California from April 5th to August 10th, 2025. The exhibition examples Orange County’s legendary punk rock roots. The exhibition includes one drawing by Josh Agle (Shag), here are his words:
“44 years ago when I was a teenager I won a contest at KROQ Radio in LA. The challenge was to draw a naked amoeba and send it to the station. The Adolescents’ hit song, “Amoeba” was in heavy rotation and the contest was a promotion created by the radio station, Rodney on the Roq, and Posh Boy Records. The band themselves were going to pick the winner live on air.
Since the Adolescents were my very favorite band at the time, I knew I had to win this contest. The winner would receive a naked amoeba, whatever that was.
I was so sure that I was going to win it that I showed up at the radio station for the judging. I ruined the suspense in the first sentence of this post, but you know I won. I got a plastic bucket full of red Jell-O with a naked Barbie doll floating in it, and the complete Posh Boy discography, which included some pretty cool records by TSOL, UXA, and Rik L Rik.
Casey Royer, the drummer of the Adolescents, pulled my winning entry off the wall and took it with him, much to the chagrin of the radio station employees. I never saw it again until yesterday when I went to see the Punk OC exhibit at the Fullerton Museum. There it was on the wall, unattributed. There’s a little tiny Josh A signature in the lower corner, a name I used long before I came up with Shag.
I saw a few other things in the show I did back in the 90s, including a Cadillac Tramps poster with Ed “Big Daddy” Roth versions of the band.
If you’re into OC punk, or even just the musical history of Orange County, check the show out. It’s worth it.”
