Shag: Coast to Coaster
Josh Agle’s artwork has been merchandised over a wide range of goods, including some popular homeware. One item that is always popular due to its cost, usefulness and intrinsic beauty is the coaster set. Thirty-seven coaster sets, including one hundred and thirty-one unique coasters, have been released since 2002, ranging from $9.99 USD to $59 USD.
In July 2002 Shag worked with Dark Horse Comics to release the first Cocktail Coaster Set. The circular printed tin case includes four thick vinyl circular coasters (3.75″ in diameter and 1/8” in thickness) with cork backing. The set retailed for $9.99 and included a four-page drink recipe booklet.
Shag also released a Pink Panther 40th Anniversary Coaster Set in 2004. The four circular coasters are 3.5” in diameter, and each shows the pink panther in a different pose. The coasters are supplied in a chrome holder and are packaged in a printed cardboard box.
In 2005 Shag was asked to produce several items for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary. The Disneyland 50th Anniversary Coaster Set is supplied in a round printed tin and includes five coasters (3.5” in diameter) with scenes of Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland.
In October 2007 Shag released three sets of coasters at the Flesh is Willing exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, California. Each set of four square coasters, only available from the museum’s gift shop, included scenes from one panel of the show’s centrepiece, a 5′ by 18′ triptych titled The Garden of Earthly Delights. The four coasters with their cork backings were supplied with a cherry-coloured wooden holder. The coaster set below is from the Paradise painting of the triptych.
The second set is from the Hell panel of the 2007 The Flesh is Willing triptych. The four square coasters are cork backed and supplied with a wooden stand. There appeared to be a selection of different posters available.
The third set is from the Earth panel of the 2007 The Flesh is Willing triptych. The four square coasters are cork backed and supplied with a wooden stand.
In 2009 Shag designed The Haunted Mansion 40th Anniversary Coaster Set for Disneyland. The five square cork-backed coasters were supplied in a printed tin at $15 USD.
In 2011 Shag produced the Walt Disney World 40th Anniversary Coaster Set of four coasters supplied in a printed tin originally for $17.95.
The Disney Cruise Line Coaster Set was produced in 2011 and included five round cork-backed coasters in a printed tin.
In 2013 the Nosy Neighbours Coaster Set was created for sale alongside the new print. The four coasters included identical images of the cropped Nosy Neighbours print.
The Disneyland Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary Coaster Set was released in June 2013. The tied set of four 4” by 4” square ceramic drink coasters with cork backs feature the enchanted tiki room’s hosts Jose, Pierre, Michael, and Fritz.
The Old Crow Whiskey Coaster was released in 2015.
The Tropical Drink Coasters set was released in 2015 and comprises of a tin containing four square drink coasters (4” x 4”) along with a stand in which to store them. The tropical drink coasters set is available directly from Shag the Store for $40 USD.
The Martini Crow Coasters set was released in 2015 and comprises of a tin containing four square drink coasters (4” x 4”) along with a stand in which to store them. The Martini Crow coasters set is available directly from Shag the Store for $39 USD.
The Hollywood 3D Clear Coasters set was released in 2015 and comprises four square drink coasters (4” x 4”) and a clear Lucite stand. The four transparent coasters stack together to produce a 3D Hollywood image and are available directly from Shag the Store for $39 USD.
The Palm Springs 3D Clear Coasters set was released in 2015 and comprises four square drink coasters (4” x 4”) and a clear Lucite stand. The four transparent coasters stack together to produce a 3D Palm Springs image and are available directly from Shag the Store for $39 USD.
The Palm Springs 3D Clear Coasters set was initially given to participants of the ‘56th Annual Cocktail Climb’ hosted by SHAG at the Ariel Tramway for Mod Palm Springs 2015. The set included a white acrylic stand to hold the coasters.
In 2015 Shag designed the Los Angeles Icons Coasters set. The set includes four coasters (sized four inch square) with a black wooden stand and is available direct from Shag the Store for $39 USD. The box is labeled ‘Around Town Coasters’ and includes four Los Angeles icons:

The Los Angeles Valley Icons Coasters set in 2015 included four square coasters (4” square) and a black wooden stand. The set is available directly from Shag the Store for $39 USD and includes four Los Angeles Valley icons:

For the Hukilau event in Fort Lauderdale for 2016, Shag released the Hukilau Coaster Set. The set includes four coasters and dark base and depicts the Mai-Kai’s mystery girl serving a mystery drink.
In October 2016, Shag created a unique artwork on a 4″ by 4″ coaster for the Salut! coaster art exhibition of over 100 artists. The coaster artwork named Still Life with Martini sold for a fixed $50 USD.
A Tiki Faces Coaster Set was released on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at the Tiki Caliente event at the Caliente Tropics Resort in Palm Springs.
The Ohana 2017 – Luau At The Lake coaster was available free at the event in June 2017
The four coasters and base in the Huntington Cads Coaster Set were exclusive to the Surfer Joe Music Festival in Livorno, Italy on the 25th June 2017.
On 16th July 2017 Shag released the Pirates of the Caribbean Scoundrels and Skeletons Coaster Set as part of the WonderGround Gallery collection. The images are from the Scoundrels and Skeletons art print which was created for the 50th Anniversary of Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. The coasters are sized 4 1/4 inches by 4 1/6 inches.
The Tiki Expressions coaster set was released in May 2018. The earthware coasters with cork backing measure 4″ by 4″, are made in the USA, and cost US$50. Out of the four Tiki face coasters (red tiki face, orange tiki face, blue tiki face, green tiki face), three match the Tiki Throw Pillows.
The Cats & Iconic Chairs drinks coasters measure 4″ x 4″ and were released in May 2018. They cost US$50, are made in the USA, and feature images of cats on iconic mid-century modern chairs. The images are very similar to the Suspicious Cat paintings from the 2017 A Seat in the Kingdom Exhibition.
Disney’s exclusive Club 33 released a set of four coasters to its members in August 2018. The Secret Lounge coasters feature four images from The Secret Lounge painting.
And in July 2019, the KISS band coaster set was released. This KISS-licensed set of four band member images is from the “The Night Before Halloween” print. A black wooden coaster set holder is included. The set cost US$49, with each coaster measuring 4″ x 4″.
The Palm Springs coaster set was the second release in July 2019 and cost US$55. The set of four 4″x4″ earthware coasters with cork backings shows images from the Palm Springs prints On A Sunday Morning, Palm Springs Afternoon, Riviera Resort & Spa and The Air Up There.
Shag released 31 Ghosts at The Haunted Mansion: Celebrating 50 Years of Retirement Unliving event in August for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. The set of four coasters cost US$24.99 and are part of a range of merchandise.
The set of four Star Wars coasters with display stand were designed by Shag, created by Beeline Creative and sold by Geeki Tikis for $50 during Comic-Con@Home in July 2020.
The Exotic Locale coaster set includes four 4″x4″ earthenware coasters with cork backing. The set is made in the USA and was released in March 2021.
The Club 33 Parrot coaster set includes four 4″x4″ earthenware coasters with cork backing. The set is made in China and was released in June 2023.
That is a huge amount of different coaster designs, enough for a pretty cool tea-party and certainly a good start for any tegestologists out there. Please send me an e-mail or comment below if you know of any more coasters or if you have any good pictures to add to this page.
