This page is for all 2018 group art shows not covered under existing posts. This post will be updated throughout the year as new shows are announced and take place. If you have information on new shows or pictures from current shows then please send me an e-mail so I can update the information.

The 2018 group art events are below listed in chronological order.

An Evening with Shag
The Jonathan Adler Store in West Hollywood, California held the An Evening with Shag event from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 6th April 2018. This curated collection of work was hosted by Shag who met with guests and signed books and artwork. The event included refreshments, a raffle, and 20% off Jonathan Adler merchandise. The event was held at the Jonathan Adler Store at 8125 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and was free and open to everyone.


Beyond the Familiar: 21st Anniversary Show
The Outré Gallery in Melbourne, Australia hosted the Beyond the Familiar: 21st Anniversary Show from May 11th to June 4th, 2018. The exhibition was a celebration of the 21st Anniversary of the Outré Gallery and showcased original work from around fifty international artists including Josh Agle. The opening night was on Friday 11th May from 6pm to 8pm with drinks provided by Campari Australia Official.

The early posters show the Josh Agle painting Bati Mon Nid from the exhibition A Seat in the Kingdom which was held in Australia during early 2017. This original acrylic on panel painting measures 24″ by 14.5” and retailed at the earlier exhibition for $16,900 AUD.
The later posters for the Beyond the Familiar: 21st Anniversary Show include a cropped image of the new Shag painting The Dream House, created for the exhibition, which celebrates architectural firm Holgar & Holgar.

The original acrylic paint on wooden panel painting The Dream House measures 20.5″ by 14.5″ and sold for AU$14,650 (approximately US$10,000).

The painting on the wall shows Naliandrah, a stunning building, designed by Holgar & Holgar, situated in Toorak, a suburb of Melbourne.

Tiki Caliente 10
The Tiki Caliente 10 event at the Caliente Tropics Resort in Palm Springs, California was held from the 17th to the 20th May 2018. The Aumauri Tapairu print was released at the Shag Store pop-up store on Saturday 19th May. This three-color serigraph is the third release in the new Unthropology series depicting young women set in Polynesian Islands wearing traditional dress alongside traditional tiki carvings. The series began with Wahine Ata Ahua at Tiki Caliente 2017 and continued with Uha Rapa Nui at Tiki Oasis 2017. This new picture represents the Cook Islands and shows aumauri, light silvery green fish up to three feet long, drying on the line. The tapairu, eldest daughter of a chief or beauty, can be seen sitting down. The print measures 8” by 10”, is hand numbered and signed in a limited edition of 100 copies, and retailed for US$99 at Tiki Caliente or US$199 afterward.

Carnival of Art & Magic
Baby Tattooville and Beyond Brookledge were merged into one weekend for the Carnival of Art & Magic at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, California from the 18th to the 20th May 2018. Shag was invited as one of six featured artists at the exclusive weekend event.

As part of an “Art Jam!”, Josh Agle worked with fellow artists Olivia De Berardinis, Brandi Milne, Johnny Kmndz Rodriguez, Craig Elliott and Camille Rose Garcia to paint a panel which was later photographed and turned into a print overnight for attendees.

Attendees could purchase a Shag “Papa Legba” print by PrintsOnWood.com. This limited edition of 100 prints measures 5″x7″ and is on 3/4″ sustainable Birch with a natural gloss finish. The print is signed on the front and hand-numbered on the back.

Comic-Con International
The Comic-Con International event run at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California from the 18th to the 22nd July 2018. The three images below are part of an official licensed limited edition print and shirt package available exclusively at the show to celebrate fifty years since the first Planet of the Apes movie.

The Shag Store was at booth #3920 with Josh Agle present from 3pm to 4pm each day to sign work and meet visitors.

A triptych celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Planet of the Apes film for Twentieth Century Fox was released at SDCC2018. The three giclée prints are In Six Months We’ll Be Running This PlanetBeware the Beast: Man and You Might Not Like What You Find. The prints measure 20″ x 40″ (51cm x 102cm) and are in a limited edition of 100 copies. The prints cost US$349 each or US$999 for the triptych, rising to US$399 each or US$1099 for the triptych after July.

Beware the Beast: Man
You Might Not Like What You Find

Three Planet of the Apes print and t-shirt sets were also released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Planet of the Apes film for Twentieth Century Fox. The three prints are Three ChimpsThree Orangutans, and Three Gorillas. The t-shirt was supplied within a printed tube in sizes  S, M, L, XL and XXL. The prints are each sized 8″ by 10″ (20cm x 25cm) and cost US$175 each or US$525 (no discount) for the set of three. After July the remaining prints were sold via the Shag Store for US$199 each or US$549 for the set of three.

An Orangutan Aloha Shirt Set was released at SDCC2018 featuring Dr. Zaius. The shirt celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Planet of the Apes film for Twentieth Century Fox. A free cloisonné pin of Dr. Zaius was provided with the aloha shirt.

The six Cocktail Birds mini-prints were also being released at SDCC2018 on the 18th July. Each print measures 5” by 7” (13cm x 18cm), is limited to 200 copies and cost US$60 at comic-con (US$300 for the set), US$79 post-show (US$450 for the set), and US$99 (US$549 for the set)after July. The images are printed on wood and are the Martini Bird, Daiquiri Bird, Campari Bird, Negroni Bird, Bacardi Bird and Bellini Bird. Note that the signature on the front is printed, with a rear sticker showing the print name and edition number. The mini-prints are easy to hang with a built-in keyhole mounting for nails.

Five new cloisonné pins debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. The five pins are German Skull, Old Crow, Shrunken Head, Space Kitty, and Star Cat (left to right below) and retailed for US$20 each. The pins are not limited so are sold via Shag Store at the same cost.


That’s from Disneyland! – Exhibition
The That’s from Disneyland! exhibition is held by Van Eaton Galleries from the 1st to the 24th August 2018 followed by a two-day auction on the 25th and 26th August. The event features items from the large collection of Disneyland enthusiast Richard Kraft.


Due to the massive quantity of items ranging from concept art, ride vehicles and original props to posters, toys, and collectibles, the exhibition is being held at 13730 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, California which is an abandoned 40,000 square feet former Sports Authority Store.


Children’s activities are being held in the “Arts & Kraftland” area from 1pm to 4pm on the exhibition weekends (August 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th). These offer free artistic opportunities for families, including lessons on drawing animated characters.

The exhibition is free to the public and open from midday to 8pm on Wednesday through to Sunday each week from Wednesday August 1st through to Friday August 24th. More information on the exhibition is available on the main That’s From Disneyland website, from Van Eaton Galleries (including the full 332-page catalog), on Facebook, and from Instagram which is providing updates on the run-up to the auction. Note that although the exhibition is free to visit, the special events require tickets purchasable through the That’s From Disneyland and Van Eaton Galleries sites. The online catalog is viewable directly on Issuu as well.

Summer Cocktails with Shag
The Jonathan Adler Store in West Hollywood, California held a second soirée on Saturday August 4th 2018. The Summer Cocktails with Shag event was held at the Jonathan Adler Store on 8125 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles from 6pm to 9pm. The reception was free and open to the public to attend, with raffles, and a free set of Shag swizzle sticks with every purchase. Shag was present to sign merchandise and attendees receive 20% off Jonathan Adler products all night. With each purchase you received a set of eight swizzle sticks (below right).


That’s from Disneyland! – Artist Signing
Shag attended the That’s from Disneyland! exhibition at 13730 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, California for an artist book signing event on Sunday 5th August 2018 from 1pm to 3pm. The That’s from Disneyland! print was available for purchase at the event. The event is being held at the Club Kraftland theater, a separate venue located directly above the free That’s From Disneyland! pop-up exhibit.


Tiki Oasis 2018
Tiki Oasis 2018 in San Diego opened at the Bali Hai on Wednesday 8th August and continued at the Crowne Plaza from Thursday 9th August to Sunday 12th August. The event title was South Seas Cinema, Shag designed a charm for the event showing a walking Tiki using a camera.


Shag attended from 10am until 1pm on Saturday 11th August in the Grand Hanalei Ballroom lobby for the special print release of Kaika Mahine. This is the fourth release in the Unthropology series depicting young women set in Polynesian Islands wearing traditional dress alongside traditional tiki carvings. The series began with Wahine Ata Ahua at Tiki Caliente 2017, followed by Uha Rapa Nui at Tiki Oasis 2017 and then Aumauri Tapairu at Tiki Caliente 10. This three-color serigraph is released in an edition size of 100 and measures 8″x10″. A Tiki Oasis 2018 Aloha shirt was also released at the event.

This Kaika Mahine print is for Hawaii, an isolated volcanic archipelago in the central Pacific that became the 50th state of America in 1959. Hawaii is the northernmost island group in Polynesia. The print shows a kaikamahine (girl, daughter, niece etc.) in front of a Hawaiian Tiki representing Ku, god of war. A swizzle stick was also given away with each print (below left an center). That’s from Disneyland! – The Artists Behind Disney Collectibles
Shag was back at the That’s from Disneyland! exhibition from 8pm to 10pm on Wednesday, August 15th for an artist panel along with fellow Disney artists Jimmy Mulligan and Terri Hardin Jackson. The three artists discussed the art behind creating Disney-inspired paintings and merchandise. James Mulligan’s Disney work included concept design for both characters and theme park shows and attractions. Terri Hardin is an artist, puppeteer, and former imagineer at Disney who designed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and The Dragon’s Lair at Disneyland Paris as well as sculptures in Splash Mountain at Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland.

The event was held at the Club Kraftland theater, a separate venue located directly above the free That’s From Disneyland! pop-up exhibit. My thanks to Dawn Biro for the great event photographs below.

25th Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational
The 25th Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational was held at Scripps Pier in La Jolla, California on August the 19th 2018 with Josh Agle as the official event artist. This charity event for the Moores Cancer Center began at 7am with a surfing tournament followed by a Luau at 11am. The auction included the original Shag painting “La Jolla Beach Party” and an event print of the painting and schedule. The Shag merchandise also included Alhoa Shirts (US$125), T-Shirts (US$20), Youth Tee (US$15), Hoodie (US$40), Hats (US$20), PopSockets (US$10), Mousemat ($5) and a 15oz mug (US$10).

That’s from Disneyland! – Auction
The That’s from Disneyland! auction is held on the weekend of the 25th to the 26th August 2018 starting at 11am. The 332-page catalog can be viewed online at the Van Eaton Galleries website. Printed copies of the catalogue can be purcased for US$40 (softcover) or US$95 (hardcover) from the site. Six Shag items in the exhibition and auction are shown on pages 136 and 137 of the auction catalog (pre-tax sales prices from the Van Eaton Galleries):

The auction raised a grand total of US$8.3M with sales taxes included, some of which goes to the Coffin-Siris Syndrome Foundation and the Chime Institute. Shag paid a bargain US$1,600 (plus sales tax) for lot 366 “United Air Lines ‘Enchanted Tiki Room’ Mobile Display with Box”.

The Secret Salon Reception
Disney’s exclusive Club 33 released The Secret Salon painting, prints and merchandise at a ticketed artist reception with Shag from 8pm to 11pm on Thursday 30th August 2018 in the Club 33 salon at Disneyland. The 45” by 19.5” original painting was bought by Club 33 for US$18,000 for display in the Jazz Lounge. Available to Club 33 members was the secret salon 18″ by 14″ unlimited edition print (US$45), a 34″ by 15″ canvas wrap limited to 100 copies, a boxed limited edition four pin set (US$35) limited to 300 copies, an accent pillow (US$40), a 9.5″ by 8″ accessory pouch (with Club 33 logo interior), a set of four coasters (US$35) and a pair of Club 33 socks.

Crime on Canvas @ Life Is Beautiful
Jay Nailor and MiShell Modern from M Modern Gallery curated the Crime on Canvas group art exhibition at the Life is Beautiful Music & Art Festival in Downtown, Las Vegas from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September 2018. The event featured  work from Josh Agle, Mark Ryden, Brandon Boyd, Paul Frank, Norman Reedus and many more artists. Shag showed the acrylic paint on panel painting “October 29, 1976” measuring 37” by 18” which sold pre-show for US$15,000.

The painting features American rock band Kiss appearing on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special broadcast on October 29th 1976. The Halloween-themed television special included three performances from Kiss who sang Detroit Rock City, Beth, and King of the Night Time World. The DVD “Kissology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection Vol.1 1974-1977” includes footage from the show with a clip of Kiss meeting Paul Lynde and singing King of the Night Time World.

The Pink Elephant Bank was also released at the 3D Retro pop-up store in the Western Hotel and Casino during the Life is Beautiful Festival in Downtown Las Vegas. The 7” deluxe designer vinyl figure doubles as a coin bank by removing his hat to deposit money. The piggy bank was released in a limited edition of 250 pieces with a retail cost of US$60.



Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School
The Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is hosting the Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School group art exhibition within its Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery. The opening reception was from 6pm (VIP) or 7pm (public) to 10pm on Thursday 27th September with a series of California-themed shows running from Saturday 29th September to June 2019. The Auto-Didactic show includes artwork from over fifty artists in addition to several notable cars painted by low-brow artists. Shag’s 2006 acrylic and vinyl paint on panel original artwork “Melrose” is on display.

Affordable Art Fair
The Affordable Art Fair was held in Hamburg, Germany from 15th to 18th November 2018. The Fiambrera Gallery from Madrid, Spain was present at stand E5. The gallery exhibited the original paintings The Phrenology StudentSmash it Up, and Pink Lady in addition to the prints Purple SunGreen SunPredators and Prey, The Purrfect Crime, and You Never Can Tell.

DesignerCon 2018
DesignerCon is an annual art and design convention held at Anaheim Convention Center in California from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th November 2018. DCon is a massive event spread over 350,000 square feet with over 350 artists and 505 vendors. The Shag Store is hosting the 20′ by 20′ booth 2616 with Shag is in attendance and exclusive products produced for the event.
Shag released the four Mahogany Monsters limited edition mini-prints at DesignerCon 2018. The 5″ by 7″ images are printed on plywood and are named The Wayward WolfThe Undead Count, The Greenish Monster, and The Dead Pharaoh. The signature on the front is printed, with a rear sticker showing the print name and edition number. The mini-prints are easy to hang with a built-in keyhole mounting for nails.

Tonga Hut 60th Anniversary Birthday Bash and Anniversary Mug Release
The Tonga Hut in North Hollywood, California celebrates its 60th anniversary from 4pm on Sunday 18th November 2018 with a Birthday Bash and Anniversary Mug Release! Shag designed the 60th Anniversary Mug and is attending to meet and greet with guests. There will also be live music from Tikiyaki 5-0, cocktails, and cake.

Outré Gallery Smith St Official Opening Night
Outré Gallery held an official opening night for its new store in Smith Street, Melbourne on Thursday 22nd November from 6pm to 8pm. This is Outré Gallery’s second location and is located at 319 Smith Street, Fitzroy. The exhibition includes many excusive and rare prints including a single copy of the limited edition print “The Blue Scooter” from 2000.
Shag Disney Retrospective
Disneyland held a Shag Artist Retrospective at Downtown Disney’s Wonderground Gallery on December 2nd 2018. This artist showcase featured Shag’s “Archived Treasures” and featured a limited-time release of Shag’s earlier works. Shag is present from 1pm to 4pm to meet and greet. Wonderground Gallery released prints from Shag’s Disney work from the past ten years. There were 10 artist proofs for each of the seven Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Annoversary prints at US$200 each.

Space Oddity
The Fiambrera Art Gallery in Madrid, Spain held the Space Oddity exhibition from 7th December 2018 to 3rd February 2019. Thirty international artists were represented including Shag who contributed a new painting called “The Moon Space Blues” measuring 8″ by 11½” and retailing for 3,800 Euros (US$4,325).

Summer Cocktails with Shag
The Melrose Avenue Jonathan Adler Store in Los Angeles, California is holding their third Shag event for the year on Thursday December 13th 2018. The Holiday Cocktails with Shag event runs from 6pm to 9pm and is free and open to the public to attend, with raffles, and a free Shag gift with every purchase. Shag will be present to sign merchandise and attendees receive 20% off Jonathan Adler products.

Frankie’s Tiki Room 10th Anniversary Party
Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas held its 10th Anniversary Party on Saturday 15th December 2018. Shag designed a limited edition “Four-Eyed Frankie” Anniversary Mug for the event. The mug is in a limited edition of just 300. A few mugs were held until the following day where they sold out quickly online. Shag was present from 5pm-7pm and again from 9pm until midnight.
