Other 2013 Group Shows

There were twelve group art shows during 2013 where Josh Agle’s work was exhibited. Four of these are covered by previous gallery group posts:

Urban Superstar Show
The fourth Urban Superstar Show was held at the Provincial Art Gallery in Santa Chiara, Italy from the 11th to the 15th February 2013. Josh Agle’s original acrylic paint on panel painting The Crack Up was shown at the Festival.


Lunch with Shag
The Trio Restaurant in Palm Springs held a Lunch with Shag event from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, 16th February 2010 with tickets available for $50 USD. The Shag Store is next door to the Trio restaurant and soft-opened during this eighth annual Modernism Week in Palm Springs.In addition to the lunch and non-alcoholic beverage with Shag, guests received a hand signed and numbered commemorative menu to take home. The offset lithograph print was produced in a limited edition of 200 copies.

A Saga in the Stars: A Tribute to a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California hosted A Saga in the Stars: A Tribute to a Galaxy Far, Far Away starting on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you…) in 2013. The group exhibition of over sixty artists, basing their work on Star Wars, ran from May 4th to May 26th.

Shags contribution was Summer of ’77, a homage to Star Wars that originally opened on May 25th 1977. This original acrylic on paper painting measures 30” by 23.5” (paper)/24” by 17.5” (image).

The sixteen-color serigraph print of Summer of ’77 released at the show measures 24” by 18” (paper)/22” by 16” (image) and is on 140lb Muscletone Paper. The print is hand signed and numbered by Shag and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. The original cost was $200 USD and the edition size was limited to 200 copies.

Riviera Retreat Print Release
An exclusive print release event was held from 7pm to 9pm on the 1st June 2013 in the Starlite Lounge at the Riviera Palm Springs in California. The event included a pop-up Shag store at the in-hotel boutique Crimson showing framed prints, many artist proofs. Shag originally stayed at the Rivera Hotel in Palm Springs when he visited, prior to buying his Palm Springs pad. The eleven-color serigraph print Riviera Retreat was hand signed and numbered by Shag with a size of 26” by 20” (paper)/22” by 15” (image). The edition size was 150 copies, comes with a certificate of authenticity, and had an original price of $295 USD.

Kustom Kulture II: A Twenty Year Anniversary Tribute to the original Kustom Kulture exhibits
The Kustom Kulture II exhibition at the Huntington Beach Art Center ran from July 13th to August 31st 2013. Shag supplied a single original acrylic on board painting called The Modeller from 2003 to the exhibition (sized 20″ by 22.5″).

Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room held a 50th Anniversary Event in Disneyland on the 28th to 29th June 2013.

Josh Agle was asked to design a range of merchandise to help celebrate the golden anniversary of the popular musical animatronic anamorphic show. The event included a cocktail reception, meet and greet with the artists, plus commemorative photographs and gifts. Shag produced a wide variety of merchandise for the Walt Disney’s Tiki Room 50th Anniversary and this is covered in this section.

Shag’s first painting Tropical Hideaway was available at the event as the acrylic on panel original (at $18,000 USD), a giclée on wooden frame (measuring 27″ by 20″, limited to 200 copies, and costing $325 USD) and as a deluxe print (measuring 18″ by 14″, pre-cut double matted, and unlimited). The card on the back included an explanation by Shag, “My kids love the Pineapple Whip served at Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room almost as much as they like the attraction itself! We always buy a couple servings before we go into the Tiki Room. I usually end up eating most of it myself“.

Shag’s second painting The Birds Sing was available at the event as the acrylic on panel original (at $18,000 USD), a giclée on wooden frame (measuring 20″ by 27″, limited to 200 copies, and costing $325 USD) and as a deluxe print (measuring 14″ by 18″, pre-cut double matted, and unlimited). The card on the back included an explanation by Shag, “On hot summer days, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room offers a magical, cooling, and calming oasis for the Disneyland guest. Unchanged since 1963, the Tiki room still gets kids to squeal in delight and adults to relive their childhood“.

There were seven three-color serigraph prints of the tikis that appear next to Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland released. Each print is sized 13″ by 19″ (paper)/8″ by 14″ (image), matted, limited to 100 copies, and cost $125 USD. The original paintings were priced at $3,500 USD. Shag explains “There are seven talking Tikis in the Courtyard of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. I was inspired by watching the kids react to the Tikis and tried to give each child and Tiki in the paintings a distinct personality“.

A postcard set of the Enchanted Tiki Room was produced containing the seven tiki pictures plus a postcard of the Tropical Hideaway picture. The cardboard packet of eight postcards originally cost was $19.95 USD.

An original painting called Two Toucans Can (below left) was released at the Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary event in addition to a limited edition print named Tiki Toucans (below right – sized 6″ by 6″ – 200 copies – hand signed and numbered by Shag).

Two large limited-edition trading pins were designed by Shag for the exhibition based on the two new paintings. These 50th anniversary pins were called Enchanted Evening and The Birds Sing. Each pin measures 1.75″ by 1″, originally cost $14.95 USD, and are limited to 250 copies.

A merchandise catalog was produced for the Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary which included Shag’s products. The prints The Birds Sing and Tropical Hideaway are shown along with the Enchanted Tiki Room Postcard Set.

A Disney 50th Anniversary Enchanted Tiki Room Coaster Set was produced as a set of four ceramic drink coasters featuring the hosts of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland – Jose, Pierre, Michael, and Fritz. The coasters measured four inch square and the set cost $29.95 USD.


An Enchanted Tiki Room Hawaiian shirt was also produced with Shag’s design and costing $79.99 USD.

A one-off clock was created as a prop for the Enchanted Tiki Room 50th Anniversary Shag event which shows the Maui and Max image:

Copro Gallery 20th Anniversary Exhibition
The Copro Gallery 20th Anniversary Exhibition in Culver City, California was held from August 17th to September 7th 2013. This group art show with over sixty artists honors the galleries role in promoting the lowbrow art movement. Josh Agle’s contribution to the show was the acrylic paint on wood panel original painting The Accomplished Liar, a 12” by 13” piece costing $5,750 USD.

Baby Tattooville 2013
Baby Tattooville is a weekend event celebrating the contemporary art community at the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside, California. In 2013, the schedule began at 3pm on Friday 4th October and continued until 2pm on Sunday 6th October. Attendees paid $2500 to attend with two-night accommodation, meals, panels, presentations and a generous goody bag. Featured artists include Steven Daily, Sylvia Ji, Olivia De Berardinis, Travis Louie, Alex Pardee, Mitch O’Connell, The Sucklord, and Chet Zar. Shag did not attend in 2013, however one of his hand-painted Circus Punks was present at the Circus Punk Challenge in the Oriental Court at 11am on the Saturday where it was won.
