Other 2004 Group Shows

2004 was a stellar year with the first privately funded spaceplane SpaceShipOne achieving spaceflight, the Spirit and Opportunity NASA rovers landing on Mars, and the Cassini probe returning detailed pictures of Saturn’s Rings. In Technology, Facebook launched and the Google IPO raised $1.67B USD, Janet Jackson also went public but moving on… The series Friends and Frasier finally ended and Lost began whilst in sport, the Summer Olympics was held in Athens, Greece. In the contemporary art world, Josh Agle showed at an extremely impressive twenty events during 2004, three of these are covered by other posts:

…From Your Valentine
The …From Your Valentine event was held at the Copro/Nason Gallery in Culver City, California from 7th to 14th February 2004. The group art event included the original acrylic on panel painting The Love Beast which sold at the exhibition for $7,500 USD.

Palm Springs Modernism Weekend
The Palm Springs Modernism Weekend was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center in California from February 13th to the 15th 2004. This celebration of mid-century architecture and design is an annual Palm Springs event. Josh Agle exhibited the original acrylic on panel painting Palm Springs Serenade which measured 26″ by 18″. A serigraph print sized 30″ by 22″ was released at the Modern Love exhibition which was hand signed and numbered, priced at $300 USD, and limited to 300 copies (plus 25 artist proofs). Note that the image was used for the Martini Kings album Palm Springs Serenade.


Juxtapoz 10th Anniversary
The Juxtapoz 10th Anniversary group art show ran at the 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, California from 1st to 30th April 2004. The exhibition of over a dozen artists included the Josh Agle original painting – The Reluctant Goddess.

Be@rbrick Worldwide Tour
Shag was asked to design a Be@rbrick for the 2004 Be@rbrick Worldwide Tour. The show ran at several locations including the Parco Museum Shibuya in Tokyo from June 11th to Jun 28th. Be@rbricks are a collectible toy manufactured by Medicom Toy with the standard size of seven centimeters (100%). The Shag bear was part of the Be@rbrick World Wide Tour Set C and is a 400% bear, being 28 centimers high.

Tiki ‘Til Dawn
Josh Agle held a book signing at the Tiki ‘Til Dawn show at the LA County Museum in Los Angeles, California on June 17th 2004. The free event at 9:30pm in the museum’s Central Court introduces new people to the museum with several authors and artists scheduled including Sven Kirsten, Robbie Conal, Graham Nash, and Gary Baseman.

100 Artists See Satan
The 100 Artists See Satan show at the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, California ran from July 3rd to September 19th 2004. The exhibition theme was a balancing to the cultural phenomena of angels (such as the 100 Artists See God exhibition) by artists visualizing the concept of Satan. A 128-page book of the exhibition was produced by Last Gasp Books.

Qeedrophonic
Qee figures are highly collectible limited-edition designer toys produced by Toy2R. In 2004 the Qeedrophonic Exhibition included one-off 8” Qee figure designs from thirty-five different artists including Shag. The three Qeedrophonic exhibitions opened at the OX-OP Gallery in Minneapolis from July 10th to August 1stSubliminal Projects from August 14th to 29th, and Laforet Museum in Tokyo from October 7th to 17th. A 96-page Qeedrophonic Exhibition book was authored by Tom Hazelmyer and published by OX-OP Press for $17.95 USD. A 90-page hardback book was also produced commemorating Qeedrophonic.


Age of Aquarius
The Age of Aquarius; Summer Solstice Group Art Show was held at the Copro/Nason Gallery in Culver City, California from July 17th to August 28th 2004. The Copro/Nason Gallery asked over thirty-five artists to contribute work on the ‘Age of Aquarius’ theme. Shag contributed the original painting Violet Girl, Indigo Boy, measuring 24″ by 17″, which sold early in the exhibition. The Los Angeles noise-pop band Scarling performed at the Age of Aquarius group art event on July 17th, the flier has Shag listed as a featured artist on the back.

7 Year Itch
The 7 Year Itch group art show at the Starlite Room in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was held from 2pm to 7pm on August 22nd 2004. This 7th year anniversary of the starlight room was sponsored by Red Rum and was themed on “kustomized kitch” and painted on vintage pop items. Fifteen renown lowbrow artists painted directly onto actual vintage artists including Shag who included a vintage lamp with painted shade, titled A Bright Idea.

Summer of Tiki
The Summer of Tiki: Tiki Art Now! group art show at The Shooting Gallery on Larkin Street in San Francisco ran from the 17th September 2004. Otto von Stroheim curated the exhibition of over twenty-two artists including Josh Agle. The show included the original Shag painting In the Ratongo Room (24” by 18”) which featured on the cover of the Tiki Art Now! book (as co-published by The Shooting Gallery and Last Gasp), and sold for $7,000 USD. The exhibition also included Shag’s serigraph prints Banana Liquer ($825 USD), The Envious Girlfriend ($850 USD), Idol Conversation ($750 USD), Death’s Unending Vacation, and Green Wahine ($300 USD).


ModCom 20 20 20
ModCom is the Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee responsible for raising awareness of, documenting, and advocating Los Angeles’ mid-century modern architecture. Josh Agle released the exclusive L.A. Modern print during the ModCom 20/20/20 tour which ran from September 18th to 19th in 2004. Shag was at the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard to sign programs and prints on Saturday, September 18th from 4pm. The thirteen-color L.A. Modern serigraph print measures 28” by 20” and was produced in a limited edition of 200 copies with a CoA. The print was available from Modcom at a special price of $250 USD. The picture includes the LA landmarks – the Cinerama Dome (1963), Pann’s (1958), and Capital Records (1956).
Ghost Town
The Ghost Town group art show at the Tin Man Alley gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ran from October 2nd to November 14th in 2004. Josh Agle included the new acrylic paint on wood board original painting Hygienesis.

Monsters a Go Go
The Monsters a Go Go group art show at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, Washington ran from October 15th to November 7th 2004 with the opening reception from 6-10pm on October 15th. The exhibition of over twenty artists work included Shag’s original painting Surf Monsters as featured on the 1999 compilation album Surf Monsters: Past, Present, & Future Surf Klassics (Various Artists).

Mondo Lounge: Where Cocktail Cultures Collide!
The first Mondo Lounge event took place at the Masonic Lodge in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 16th 2004. This event celebrated the class and quality of the Rat Pack era and included a shot glass (3″ tall, 2″ diameter) designed by Shag.

Paws/LA. Los Angelas
Paws/LA was founded in 1989 to help the residents of Los Angeles County who have a life-threatening illness keep and care for their pets. Josh Agle produced a very limited edition (10 copies plus 5 artist proofs) Paws Christmas iris print (measuring 13” by 19”) in aid of the group. It is unclear if there was an event to officially release this print.

The Sophisticated Savage
The Sophisticated Savage was a group Tiki show that ran at the DC Gallery in Denver, Colorado from December 3rd 2004 to January 7th 2005. The exhibition opening reception took place on Friday, December 3rdd at 7pm. Josh Agle contributed the painting Heimlich: A True Story which retailed for $6,000 USD and quickly sold.

Krampus & Christmas
The Krampus & Christmas group art show ran at the Copro/Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California from December 11th 2004 to January 15th 2005. The opening reception was on December 11th 2004 from 7pm to 11:30pm. The exhibition included rare original Krampus cards from the collection of Monte Beachamp, publisher of Blab magazine and publisher of  The Devil in Design: The Krampus Postcards. Shag’s piece for the exhibition was Krampus Wagon.

The limited-edition 2-color etching Krampus Wagon was released at the Krampus & Christmas show. The 30.5cm by 27.9cm print is in a limited edition of 100 (plus 15 artist proofs) at an original cost of $180.
